It is as though the mountains themselves opened their hands and let everything fall away.
For those of us who have walked these valleys, eaten in these homes, and shared tea with these villagers, the grief is personal. These are not abstract coordinates on a map or fleeting images on a news cycle. They are vibrant communities built on centuries of tradition. Nepal sits in the lap of the Himalayas, a land traditionally known as “Dev Bhumi” - “God’s Country” - where hospitality is a sacred value expressed in the ancient phrase “Atithi Devo Bhava”: the guest is akin to God.
For millennia, poets and pilgrims have recognized the sacred character of these peaks. In “Kumarasambhava”, the fourth-century Sanskrit poet Kalidasa celebrated the Himalayas as a treasure house of biodiversity, precious minerals, and the divine cradle of the Ganga.
Today, however, the mountains are speaking in a very different voice. They are warning us that breathtaking majesty and extreme fragility now exist side-by-side.
The valleys of the Himalayan range shelter some of the world's highest peaks and largest ice reserves outside the polar regions. Yet they are also among the most climate-vulnerable landscapes on Earth. A study by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the United Nations Development Program identified 624 glacial lakes across Nepal, India, and Tibet. Forty-seven were classified as potentially dangerous and at high risk of outburst flooding - 21 of them in Nepal alone.
The precise meteorological and geological chain of events behind the August 26 disaster will take time to fully map. No forecast predicted an event of this magnitude at the affected location. Scientists suspect an immense section of high-altitude ice sheared off and plunged into the valley below, unleashing a catastrophic outburst.
While the exact mechanics remain under investigation, the broader reality is undeniable: the Himalayas are growing dangerously unstable.
As the planet warms, glaciers melt and retreat, destabilizing mountain walls that once seemed immovable. Water accumulates in high-altitude lakes, creating dynamic time bombs. Extreme rainfall compounds these hazards, converting fragile mountain corridors into fast-moving paths of destruction. Climate change may not cause every individual landslide or flood, but it amplifies the conditions that make them more frequent, more intense, and far more deadly. When this environmental vulnerability collides with poverty, isolation, fragile infrastructure, and non-existent early-warning systems, natural hazards inevitably become human catastrophes.
That is the lesson we cannot afford to lose amid the grief.
The people living in remote Himalayan communities should not have to rely on the sound of rushing water as their only early warning. An alert delivered even thirty minutes prior can mean the difference between life and death. But warnings are only effective if communities possess the communications networks, evacuation routes, hardened shelters, and emergency infrastructure required to act on them.
The images coming out of Nepal and Tibet must spark immediate, coordinated policy shifts across the region. This crisis demands three clear priorities:
1. Establish Cross-Border Monitoring Systems: The nations of the Himalayan range - Nepal, India, China, and Bhutan—must build an integrated, real-time monitoring network for glaciers, rainfall, and river levels. Glaciers do not recognize international borders, and monitoring systems cannot stop at political checkpoints.
2. Invest in "Last-Mile" Warning Infrastructure: Technical data stored in capital cities saves no lives. Alerts must reach remote farmers, mountain households, and traveling pilgrims instantly via multi-channel local networks.
3. End Unregulated Mountain Development: Regional leaders must halt environmental destruction disguised as progress. Unregulated construction on fragile hillsides violates ecological boundaries and turns valleys into death traps when floodwaters rise.
Beyond policy and science lies a profound human debt. Among those lost on August 26 were local villagers, infrastructure workers, and pilgrims making the sacred journey to Kailash Mansarovar. They had traveled from across the region and around the world, seeking spiritual renewal in one of the most revered places on Earth. Instead, the mountains became their final resting place. We must refuse to let their lives fade into mere statistics. Every destroyed home held a family story; every person lost leaves behind loved ones carrying unimaginable grief.
Kalidasa envisioned the Himalayas not as inert stone and ice, but as a living source of abundance, beauty, and wonder. If previous generations viewed these mountains as a divine gift, our generation must treat them as an urgent responsibility.
We cannot stop every flood, nor can we command a glacier to remain fixed to a cliff face. But we can build early warning systems. We can strengthen local infrastructure. We can share life-saving data across borders. We can invest in resilience before tragedy strikes, rather than offering condolences after the fact.
