Para Asian Games team celebrates cultural heritage
India’s contingent showcased the country’s rich heritage at the Para Asian Games opening ceremony, with athletes wearing ceremonial blazers featuring motifs inspired by its 5,000-year-old civilisation.
More than 100 athletes participated in the ceremony, led by Paralympic medallist sprinter Simran Sharma and leading shuttler Pramod Bhagat, who carried the national flag.
The blazers featured designs inspired by Indus Valley seals, highlighting the ancient civilisation’s script and motifs.
The Paralympic Committee of India said the team’s ceremonial blazers symbolised 5,000 years of Indian civilisation. They featured SaptSindhu, representing the land of seven rivers and the Saraswati, on the collar, while the Tricolour was displayed on the pocket.
India has sent a 281-member contingent, including 168 athletes, 112 men and 56 women, competing in 11 sports. The Games will conclude on October 24, with around 3,000 athletes from 45 nations participating under the motto “Imagine One Heart”.
India recorded its best performance at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, finishing fifth with 111 medals, including 29 gold, 31 silver and 51 bronze.
