A unique internship programme designed to enable college leavers to use their summer to develop core skills by working on community projects was launched this week in Leicester. Applications are open till March 31st 2016.

Programme Director and former Soar Valley and QE student Hersh Thaker said “We realised there was a need to channel the talents and time of young people in Leicester during what is their first long summer break. It’s a much more constructive way of using summer than just hanging out.”

Our observations of the UK Indian community has on one hand highlighted the desire of young people to grow and apply their energy and skills constructively, and on the other hand shown that community organisations lack capacity and are looking for fresh energy and thinking. The Chakra Internship Programme is designed to bridge this disconnect and offer young people the platform to build strength of character.

Hersh goes on to say that the development workshops and training for the participants will be highly experiential and follow the philosophy of ‘learning by doing’. The programme will challenge individuals and aim to build their sense of civic responsibility, personal leadership and core transferable skills. These skills and attitudes are becoming ever more important to enable young people to make the most of their time at University and beyond.

The initiative has received early support from several community and professional organisations, who will work closely with the interns. Dillan Shikotra, from Shri Wanza Samaj said “We believe this Internship will drive community innovation enabling our communities flourish with new energy, talent and ideas.”
