A 99-year-old war veteran, has raised over £4m for NHS by walking lengths of back garden with the aim of walking 100 lengths of his garden before his momentous 100th birthday. Capt Tom Moore, had served the British Army in the second world war, and completed postings in India and Sumatra.

Following the coronavirus outbreak the Yorkshire veteran had initially planned to raise £1,000 through the fitness challenge. However, after launching his campaign on 8th April, he raised £70,000 in just 24 hours and within a few days fundraised £3m.

“It’s almost unbelievable isn’t it? But when you think who it’s for, and they’re all so brave … I think they deserve every penny of it,” he said in an interview with the BBC.

All the money Moore raises will be donated to NHS Charities Together for wellbeing packs and rest and recuperation centres for frontline staff, as well as electronic devices for patients to communicate with their families while in isolation.
