A man charged with the murder of a man in London Road, in the city last week, has appeared before magistrates.

Rajesh Chhagan Khunti, 30, from Leicester, is charged with murdering Dilovan Fazil Mohammed.

Mr Mohammed, 30, of no fixed address, was found injured shortly before 1am on Wednesday and was pronounced dead in hospital.

A post-mortem examination concluded he died of a stab wound.

On Saturday, bearded Khunti, dressed in a grey sweatshirt and jogging bottoms briefly appeared before the magistrates' court in the city. He spoke only to confirm his name, age and address before the magistrate remanded him in custody to appear before Leicester Crown Court via video link on Monday.

Mr Mohammed was discovered near the railway station at 12.39am on Wednesday and was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police initially thought he might have been hit by a vehicle which left the scene without stopping.

However, a murder investigation was launched when a post-mortem examination confirmed a stab wound as the cause of death.

Mr Mohammed was said to be staggering along the road as a result of his injury.

Leicestershire Police confirmed Mr Mohammed's identity and released a photograph of him. They also made a further urgent appeal to anyone who saw him in the course of the evening.

In a statement, the force said: "Anyone who may have been in the area of the railway station late on Tuesday night or in the early hours of Wednesday, and who saw Mr Mohammed, is urged to contact the police."
