Leicester: Leicester East MP Keith Vaz organised a meeting with people living in Hastings Road and Victoria Road East, due to concerns about road safety and speeding traffic in Northfields.

Traffic-calming ideas, including a vehicle-activated speed sign and pedestrian crossing, were discussed.

North Evington ward councillor Luis Fonseca, who was at the meeting, said: "Due to the road being a rat run, accidents often happen. We wanted to meet residents to speak with them."

A number of accidents have happened on both roads. In fact an inquest in June had heard how three friends died last January after their speeding car crossed on to the wrong side of the road and hit a couple's oncoming vehicle in Hastings Road. The couple were seriously hurt.

Ram Odedra, owner of a supermarket in Victoria Road East called Best One, reportedly said he would welcome traffic-calming measures, including cameras and many of his customers agreed.
