A soap star returned to her roots to visit the "inspirational" families and staff at Rainbows hospice. Actress Rakhee Thakrar, best known for playing Shabnam Massood in EastEnders, took time out from her schedule to spend a day at the Loughborough hospice for children and young people.

The 31-year-old, who grew up on Leicester's St Matthew's estate but now lives in London, joined the children in arts and crafts activities. She took part in a TV quiz organised in her honour, enjoyed a performance by the Rainbows Choir, posed for photographs and signed autographs. Speaking during her visit, Rakhee, whose character in the hit BBC One show is at the centre of a major pregnancy storyline, said: "Meeting the children and young people was amazing. What a special day it's been. I never expected a hospice to be so happy. It really is a place where families can make memories."

Rakhee has also appeared in popular TV series such as Doctors, Holby City and Peep Show – and played a lead character in British-Asian drama Cloud 9. She landed her role in EastEnders in January, last year.

Rakhee said she was impressed by the work of the care team, who look after children with terminal and life-limiting conditions, and their families.

She said: "The staff at Rainbows are incredible. It's amazing how much actually goes on at the hospice and how far the staff go to make things happen. Really and truly inspiring."
