26 year-old Bharat Soma has testified that black magic made him attack his former fiancee and her lover at East Park Road, Spinney Hills. Darshana Narotam,17, cut off an arranged marriage to Soma to be with love interest Prashant Govinde, 22 before the stabbing.

“As a Hindu, we believe sometimes someone does magic to us' Soma said in court, when questioned about the assault. He said he became ill when Darshana broke away from him: “I wasn’t able to eat properly, I was being sick and I was having nightmares about ghosts.” The prosecution claims Soma deliberately committed a revenge attack where a fifteen year-old boy was also hurt trying to protect the couple.

Soma claims he bought the paring knife used to commit the stabbing for his cooking and forgot it was still in his pocket. He also stated that “someone has done some magic on me” in his official police statement.
