A householder dishonestly claimed benefits by failing to declare he owned a second home. Faruk Ajij, 56, was overpaid £6,579 in council tax and job seekers payments. He pleaded guilty to four counts of benefit fraud between 2009 and 2012.

Simon Hunka, prosecuting, told Leicester Crown Court that Ajij told the authorities he was living with his wife and three children at the family home in Kimberley Road, Leicester, which he owned. He was legitimately unemployed when he made the claim, but he failed to declare that he also owned a second home in Highway Road, Leicester, which was purchased in 2007 and lived in by tenants.

Both properties were owned outright with no mortgage.
