According to official figures, the number of rapes recorded by police in England and Wales is the highest in the European Union. It is said that the results showed three times more rapes were recorded compared to France who had the second highest number.

The figures from Eurostat, the official statistics organisation of the European Union revealed that there were 35,798 rapes in England and Wale in 2015, whereas there were 12,956 in France, 7,022 in Germany, and 5,544 in Sweden.

A spokesperson from Eurostat said, “It should be borne in mind that the figures do not necessarily reflect the actual number of violent sexual crimes. Rather they show to what extent such crimes are reported to and recorded by police. Therefore the variation between countries is influenced by general awareness and attitudes to sexual violence offences.”
