As more and more people are being tested for vitamin D insufficiency, doctors advise that awareness of the symptoms is essential for maintaining good health. Despite being a tropical nation, many Indians struggle with the shortage. “Vitamin D deficiency in Indians is still as high as 68 per cent. Not only is it seen in urban areas, it is also seen in rural areas. Reasons for this include urbanisation, lifestyle, skin colour, dress code, and most importantly, our genetic predisposition,” said Dr Aparna Bhanushali, head of growth and scientific support, Haystack Analytics.
Therefore, it is crucial to recognize the deficit and address it. The initial warning indications of a deficiency must be examined.
Nutritionist Ruchita Batra enlisted fatigue and weakness, lacking energy, and experiencing general weakness as general indicators of deficiency. “If you find yourself frequently fatigued, even after getting enough sleep, it might be worth considering your vitamin D levels,” said Batra.
Chronic illness: Vitamin D is essential for maintaining a healthy immune system. Your immune system may become weakened by low vitamin D levels, making you more vulnerable to infections, the flu, and other illnesses. Low vitamin D levels may be the cause of recurrent illnesses or trouble recovering from them, according to Batra.
Pain in the bones and muscles: Calcium absorption and the health of the bones depend on vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency can cause weak bones, which can cause joint pain, muscular aches, and bone pain. Consider vitamin D deficiency as a potential explanation if you have unexplained or ongoing pain in your bones, muscles, or joints.
Mood changes: Vitamin D has been linked to mood regulation, and low levels may contribute to mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD). “If you notice a significant change in your mood, especially during the colder months or when you have limited sun exposure, it could be related to vitamin D deficiency,” said Batra, adding that slow weight loss can be another possible sign. Constantly feeling tired could be a sign of deficiency.
