Eyestrain, dryness, and age-related vision concerns are common problems in today's digital world. Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to eye health that promotes prevention and rejuvenation.

Ayurveda emphasises a balance between the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Imbalances in these energies can manifest as eye problems. You can nurture your vision naturally by incorporating dietary and lifestyle practices and specific Ayurvedic therapies.

Dietary wisdom for eye health

Ayurveda recommends a diet rich in antioxidants and vitamins essential for eye health. Leafy greens, carrots, and Amla (Indian gooseberry) are all recommended for their Vitamin A and C content. Nuts, seeds, and ghee provide Vitamin E, while essential fatty acids found in fish can nourish the eyes. Triphala, a herbal formulation of three fruits, is popular for its detoxifying and vision-strengthening properties.

Soothing eye routines

Ayurveda offers external therapies that cleanse and nourish the delicate eye area. Netra Basti, a gentle medicated ghee bath for the eyes, can soothe dryness and irritation. Alternatively, applying cool rose water or Triphala eyewash can be refreshing. A gentle massage with castor oil around the eyelids can promote relaxation for tired eyes.

Apply Anjana (collyrium) and use Nasya (infiltration of medicines via nostrils) on a regular basis to protect the eyes and remove excess Kapha.

Exercises for focused vision

Simple eye exercises can improve blood circulation and strengthen the eye muscles. Palming involves cupping your hands gently over your eyes to block out light and promote relaxation. Blinking exercises and rolling the eyes in different directions can also help reduce strain and improve focus. Trataka, an ayurvedic eye exercise, helps improve vision and eye strength. Take ten minutes of your day to sit in a dark room, position the ghee lamp so the flame is visible at a 30-degree angle, and gaze steadily at it. Various Kriyakalpa treatments, such as Tarpana, Putapaka, Seka, Anjana, Aschyotana, Pindi and Bidalaka, are effective in treating and preserving eye health.
