It is said that the controversial author, Sir Salman Rushie has claimed that the people who defended his most controversial work would not have done so in today's day and age due to political correctness.

There were leading literary figures who rallied in defence to Salman Rushdie, after The Satanic Verses provoked fury of Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran, who issued a fatwa against him for blasphemy, in 1989. This had forced to author to go into hiding.
