Sri Ayyappa Seva Samaj in Nairobi celebrated its 24th Prathishta Day anniversary with a week-long programme that highlighted not only spiritual devotion but also the organisation’s growing role in community service and cultural preservation.

Founded as a place of worship for devotees of Lord Ayyappa, the temple has evolved into a key institution for the Indian diaspora in Kenya, bringing together families through religious, cultural and charitable initiatives. The anniversary celebrations, held from 24 to 31 May, attracted devotees from across the community and featured traditional rituals, cultural performances and outreach activities.

Among the major religious events were the Kodiyettu flag-hoisting ceremony, Maha Sudarshana Homam, Bhagavathi Seva and Padi Pooja, all conducted in accordance with traditional practices. The celebrations also featured Chendamelam performances and a temple procession that recreated the atmosphere of Kerala’s famous temple festivals in the heart of Nairobi.
Alongside the religious observances, the Samaj showcased classical dance, devotional music and youth performances, reflecting its commitment to passing cultural traditions to younger generations.

Organisers also used the occasion to highlight the temple’s charitable work, including support for vulnerable families, educational causes and humanitarian initiatives. Temple leaders said the spirit of “Seva”, or selfless service, remains central to the organisation’s mission.

The celebrations concluded with the ceremonial lowering of the temple flag, marking the end of the anniversary observances and reaffirming the values of faith, service and community that have guided the institution for nearly a quarter of a century.
