FBI Director Kash Patel is facing a wave of intense criticism from former intelligence officials and lawmakers who warn that his leadership is leaving the United States vulnerable to foreign espionage.

Since mid-December, several high-ranking former agents have accused Patel of “dismantling” the bureau’s core counterintelligence capabilities by reassigning roughly a quarter of the agency’s 1,500 agents to immigration and deportation cases. Robert Anderson, the former head of FBI counterintelligence, issued a stark warning, stating that Patel “needs to wake up” to the rising threats from China and Iran. Critics argue that the Trump administration’s push to decentralise the bureau and relocate over a thousand agents out of Washington, D.C., has created a disaster that prioritises political optics over national security.

The scrutiny intensified this week following the emergence of a viral podcast appearance featuring Patel and his girlfriend, Alexis Wilkins. Recorded while a nationwide manhunt continues for a shooter who killed two students and wounded nine others at Brown University on December 13, the interview shows the couple laughing and discussing their personal relationship. Political opponents, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, have lambasted the Director for recording the podcast with conservative host Katie Miller while a mass murderer remains at large.

Former agents have described the current climate within the bureau as a “rudderless ship,” with some internally labelling the leadership as the “Kash-Bongino circus,” in reference to Deputy Director Dan Bongino. The internal turmoil suggests that Patel’s tenure may be under threat from within the White House itself, as aides reportedly grow frustrated with the negative media coverage surrounding his unconventional leadership style.

In addition to the policy shifts, Patel is battling serious allegations regarding the misuse of taxpayer-funded resources for personal gain. Reports surfaced in early December suggesting that Patel had used FBI aircraft to attend Wilkins’ singing performances and had assigned her an agency security detail, despite the couple not being married. There are further claims that agents were directed to transport a friend of Wilkins home while they were intoxicated.

While the White House has dismissed these reports as fake news, the New York Post obtained a report from a group of 24 active and retired agents claiming Patel is “in over his head.” During the controversial podcast, Wilkins also addressed and denied online conspiracy theories suggesting she was a foreign intelligence operative.
