WASHINGTON DC: President Donald Trump has cancelled the Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, a measure that was previously extended by an executive order from former President Joe Biden. The revocation, which took effect on September 1, comes just as Harris is preparing for a national book tour to promote her new memoir.
A memo dated August 28 from the Trump administration to the Secretary of Homeland Security authorised the discontinuation of any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law.
It has been reported that since returning to the White House in January, Trump has also revoked Secret Service protection for other notable figures, including former President Joe Biden's children, Hunter and Ashley Biden, and former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci.
Protection for former Trump officials who became his critics, such as former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former National Security Adviser John Bolton, has also been cancelled. The cancellation of her protection means Harris will lose her round-the-clock personal detail and access to the Secret Service's threat intelligence analysis. Her Los Angeles home will also no longer be protected by federal agents. The cost of mounting similar private protection could run into millions of dollars annually.
