Vineet Johri, whose lens has witnessed countless tales of romance and commitment. With a keen understanding of light, composition, and emotion, he has mastered the art of freezing time, immortalising the laughter, tears, and tender exchanges that define a couple's journey into matrimony. In an interview with Asian Voice, he spoke about the evolution of South Asian wedding photography and challenges or opportunities being a wedding photographer.
Speaking about the evolution of South Asian wedding photography, Vineet said, “With the rise of social media and the influence of Bollywood, weddings have evolved into grand and colourful spectacles. Couples today seek inspiration from platforms like Instagram and movies, shaping their wedding visions based on what they see. Unlike in the past, where traditions and parental guidance dictated wedding arrangements, modern couples have access to endless wedding ideas at their fingertips. They browse through a plethora of videos and photos online, cherry-picking elements that resonate with their personal tastes. South Asian weddings in the UK have particularly embraced this trend, with some couples taking their celebrations to extraordinary levels, such as weddings in Disneyland Paris or on the streets of Westminster.
“Recently, there's been a surge in requests for Instagram reels from couples looking to document their weddings in a social media-friendly format. This trend reflects the growing influence of social media on wedding aesthetics, with couples keen to curate memorable moments for their online audiences. I've had the opportunity to work with many clients from India and beyond, capturing stunning pre-wedding moments in picturesque locations across the UK and even abroad. One memorable shoot involved a couple split between Paris and London, where we seamlessly blended two distinct settings into a single cinematic experience. The ever-evolving landscape of social media continues to shape wedding trends, with Instagram serving as a catalyst for new ideas that quickly gain popularity among couples seeking to elevate their wedding experiences.”
Talking about unique challenges or opportunities he has faced as a wedding photographer, he said, “Over the past decade, I've had the opportunity to cover a wide array of weddings, ranging from South Asian to Jewish and Christian ceremonies. While each culture brings its own unique traditions and customs, South Asian weddings, in particular, offer a vibrant and celebratory atmosphere. Despite the challenges that may arise, such as managing large crowds or navigating unpredictable situations, I believe in embracing the energy and excitement of the moment rather than imposing control. As a photographer, my goal is to seamlessly blend in with the festivities and capture genuine moments of joy and spontaneity. I find that by immersing myself in the celebration and allowing events to unfold naturally, I can produce authentic and heartfelt photographs that truly encapsulate the essence of the occasion.
“One memorable wedding that comes to mind was held at Kew Gardens, where logistical challenges, such as navigating long distances between venues, presented obstacles. However, by carefully planning and strategising beforehand, including positioning cameras strategically to capture key moments, my team and I were able to overcome these challenges and deliver exceptional results,” he added.
