Dr Vinay Raniga, a distinguished British Indian has been chosen as the parliamentary candidate by the Conservative Party to run in the upcoming UK general election in 2024, representing Oxford & Abingdon.

Dr Raniga comes from a working-class background. His parents migrated from East Africa to the UK in the 1970s, in fear of the sentiments of Idi Amin’s genocide in Uganda spreading to Tanzania and Kenya. His family originates from Gujarat, India. He has values like hard work, integrity, compassion, family, faith, entrepreneurship and aspiration through education.

In an interview with Asian Voice, Dr Raniga discusses his candidacy, constituency and campaign plans. Below are paraphrased answers from his interview. Dr Raniga was in his scrubs, getting ready for his clinic in the constituency.

How do you believe your background and experiences uniquely qualify you for the career you’re choosing in politics?

My parents have always supported my aspiration through education, encouraging me to apply to Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, overcoming logistical challenges and reinforcing my belief in the transformative power of policy changes. Choosing a career as a dental surgeon, I witnessed firsthand the impact of policies on vital areas like the NHS during the pandemic.

Recognising the importance of economic acumen in policymaking, I am dedicated to contribute to my country at a policy level. This led me want to run to be the MP of Oxford West & Abingdon. My commitment to this cause stems from the belief that small policy changes can have profound effects, and it requires dedicated individuals who understand the responsibility of handling taxpayers' money.

What are the key issues that you feel passionate about addressing?

The first is infrastructure, considering that Oxford and Abingdon are ancient towns! The existing traffic and policy decisions like Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) need a thorough and thoughtful review. Another local concern is protecting our countryside: the Botley West Solar Power Plant will ruin that.

I strongly oppose placing large solar panels in fields, advocating instead for their installation on buildings. Understanding and improving flood defence plans is also vital, given recent flooding incidents in Botley & Abingdon.  Of course, the future of the NHS is something I am very passionate about. I work n frontline healthcare so I understand what the people want so I can take that up the chain

Education policy is another area of focus, driven by the belief that every child deserves a world-class education. Additionally, fostering diversity in politics is essential. Encouraging individuals from diverse backgrounds to run for office is important, but the focus should always be based on the merit of an individual.

Can you outline your campaign strategy? How do you plan to connect with voters and communicate your platform effectively?

I strongly believe in the power of speaking to people face-to-face; people deserve the opportunity to meet and engage with their local representatives. Despite the prevalence of social media, I consider knocking on someone's door, shaking hands, and having in-person conversations as indispensable. While maintaining a robust online presence is crucial in the digital age, personal connections remain paramount.

Door-to-door campaigning allows one to understand my neighbours concerns, and learn about the challenges facing their local communities. Recently, during a canvassing effort in Botley, Oxford, residents shared their perspectives on issues such as the Botley West Solar Plant, housing, and difficulties in accessing GP and dentist appointments. These valuable insights can only be obtained through direct communication.

What makes Rishi Sunak a strong candidate who deserves to be re-elected as the Prime Minister of the UK?

I believe Rishi Sunak has demonstrated a clear and effective plan for the country. We just need to stick to it because it is working. In contrast, Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party appears to lack a substantive plan. Rishi Sunak has a proven track record of competence and diligence. During the pandemic, he played a pivotal role in implementing the furlough scheme, which prevented job losses and sustained the economy. Additionally, he secured funding for the successful vaccine rollout in the UK, making the country one of the first to achieve widespread immunity. Sunak is strong on the international stage, standing up against Russian aggression against Ukraine and reaping the benefits of Brexit.

Inflation which was at 11% a year ago, has been reduced to less than half that figure. This economic stability has allowed for tax cuts, which will fuel investment and subsequent economic growth. While such achievements take time, the impact is evident in the progress made. What sets him apart is his humility; he doesn't emphasise his background but focuses on his achievements and contributions. In the pool of candidates aspiring to be Prime Minister, Sunak stands out as the most competent with a clear plan.
