Revised data has shown that the UK's economy experienced faster growth than initially believed since the start of the Covid pandemic, outpacing France and Germany since the end of 2019. These growth figures were anticipated to be revised upward after the Office for National Statistics (ONS) recently published new estimates for the pandemic-era economic performance.

However, analysts note that the UK's growth remains lackluster. According to the latest ONS figures, the UK economy grew by 1.8% since the pandemic began, a significant contrast to the previous estimate of a 0.2% contraction. Additionally, the economy expanded by 0.3% in the first quarter of this year, up from the previously estimated 0.1%. The estimate for the April-to-June quarter remained unchanged at 0.2%. Despite these revisions, ONS Chief Economist Grant Fitzner emphasized that the UK's growth rate has been "almost unrevised over the last 18 months.

Data based on 'richer data' from the ONS annual survey revealed that the UK economy was larger than previously thought in the last quarter of 2021 compared to pre-pandemic levels. These new figures now show that the UK's growth since the pandemic surpasses that of France at 1.7% and Germany at 0.2%.

The latest GDP figures revealed a 0.5% contraction in the economy for July, attributed to a combination of strike action and adverse weather conditions. There have been ongoing concerns about the economy's lackluster performance in recent months.
