Islamabad: Over the past three days, severe flooding brought on by seasonal rains in Afghanistan has killed at least 31 people and left scores missing, while in neighboring country, Pakistan, 13 people perished in landslides and heavy rains.

At least 31 people have been killed, 74 have been injured, and 41 are still missing, according to Shafiullah Rahimi, the Taliban's designated spokesperson for Afghanistan's state ministry for disaster management. The provinces of Maidan Wardak, Ghazni, and Kabul were all affected by flash floods. The majority of the casualties, he continued, were in west Kabul and Maidan Wardak.

The most recent flash flood happened in the Jalrez district of Maidan Wardak province west of Kabul, killing 12 people, said Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid. Rescue crews were busy performing search and rescue operations while at least 40 more persons were reported missing, he said. According to a statement from the provincial governor's office, hundreds of homes were either damaged or destroyed, and the missing people are likely buried beneath the wreckage of those dwellings.
