Islamabad: In a defeat to the Imran Khan-led PTI, a full bench of the “HC” in Pakistan occupied Kashmir banned the region’s “prime minister”, Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, from being a member of the legislative assembly for disrespect. Ilyas belongs to PTI.

Following the verdict, Ilyas has ceased to hold office and the legislative assembly will have to elect a new “PM”. Over the weekend, Ilyas had blamed the judiciary for affecting the functioning of his government and interfering in the domain of the executive through the grant of stay orders. The court had served notices to Ilyas to explain his position with regard to his “derogatory remarks about the superior judiciary”. Ilyas appeared before the court. He did not contest and instead tendered an apology, which the HC rejected.

Ilyas was found guilty of the contempt of court charges, the HC stated in its order. "He stands disqualified from being elected or chosen or from membership in the legislative assembly or to hold any public office for two years," it stated. Ilyas has the right to challenge the ruling in the “supreme court” in PoK.
