Islamabad: According to United Nations, since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, the country has become the most repressive in the world for women and girls, deprived of many of their basic rights.

In a statement made public on International Women's Day, the UN mission claimed that Afghanistan's new leaders have demonstrated an almost "singular concentration" on enforcing laws that essentially lock the majority of women and girls within their homes. They have outlawed women in public places like gyms and parks as well as girls' education past the sixth grade. Also, women are required to cover their entire body when working for local, national, and international nongovernmental organisations.

“Afghanistan under the Taliban remains the most repressive country in the world regarding women’s rights,” said Roza Otunbayeva, special representative of the UN secretary-general and head of the mission to Afghanistan. “It has been distressing to witness their methodical, deliberate, and systematic efforts to push Afghan women and girls out of the public sphere,” she added.
