Hunt's message: Stay with me or risk Johnson-like disorder

Amid speculations of Rishi Sunak possibly replacing Jeremy Hunt at No 11 to introduce a fresh perspective, the chancellor spoke about the economy in an interview, emphasizing the need to stay committed to the plan without straying. This reference holds significance within the Conservative circles as it was a term Dominic Cummings used for Boris Johnson due to his chaotic governing style. Hunt's message seemed to suggest that sticking with his strategy could prevent an impression of Johnson-like disorder during an election year.

Not everyone within No 10 has been comfortable with Hunt's role, preferring a more politically aligned figure closely tied to the prime minister. Although Sunak might have been tempted to replace Hunt with a chancellor who aligns with his own right-wing, tax-cutting approach, there doesn't appear to be a significant push for change within the party regarding this matter.

Meanwhile, the Eurosceptic right is more focused on blaming the Bank of England for not anticipating inflation.

Hunt addressed concerns about Nigel Farage's debanking by requesting a financial regulator investigation, a move that was echoed by the chancellor on GB News and followed by a thankful tweet from Farage. This sequence aimed to mitigate calls for action among Tories concerned about Farage's potential return to mainstream politics.

Sunak and Hunt's economic strategy, aimed at curbing inflation even while risking a recession, isn't facing widespread opposition among backbench Tories. Despite concerns about the party facing an election during a potential recession, a calculation is made that a larger portion of the public is grappling with the impact of rising living costs and prices compared to those affected by job losses in a short recession.
