13% pay raise for British Airways workers

Approximately 24,000 employees at British Airways are set to experience a salary increase of over 13% spanning 18 months starting in September, according to the Unite union. However, this deal excludes pilots and management, while workers will also receive a one-time payment of £1,000. This agreement, achieved after extensive negotiations, mitigates the risk of disruptions in light of surging air travel demand.

As inflation remains high, workers in various sectors are advocating for higher wages, prompted by the persistently high rate of general price increases in the UK. Despite a slight decrease, inflation still stands at 7.9%, well above the Bank of England's 2% target.

Unite's negotiation efforts primarily aimed to alleviate the impact of inflation on workers, also succeeded in reversing pay cuts enacted in 2020. The substantial pay raise follows rigorous negotiations, as noted by Unite's general secretary Sharon Graham.

However, challenges persist, with air traffic controller strikes in France contributing to airspace congestion across the continent, leading budget carriers such as Ryanair and EasyJet to cancel numerous flights.

In a recent development, British Airways managed to avoid turmoil as a series of labour strikes by ground handlers was cancelled. This marks a significant reversal for the airline, which had previously reduced its workforce by over 10,000 employees in response to the pandemic. However, as travel demand inches closer to 2019 levels, British Airways has subsequently hired thousands of additional staff.
