A recent report has revealed that the towns and cities in the UK that require the most investment are situated above areas with the greatest potential for geothermal energy. As part of the government's levelling -up agenda, a network of underground geothermal plants is being proposed to tap into this untapped energy source. According to an academic study commissioned by No 10, these areas are approximately three times more likely to be rich in geothermal energy.

Research conducted by the University of Durham has revealed that the local authority areas that are most in need of levelling up, such as Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough, East Lindsey, Hartlepool, Northumberland, and Bassetlaw, are also rich in geothermal potential. Additionally, other areas that are well-suited for producing geothermal heat and electricity include Newcastle upon Tyne, North East Derbyshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire, and Nottingham.

Theoretically, the UK has an abundant supply of geothermal energy trapped underground that could potentially heat every home for a century. Even with conservative estimates that consider commercial and logistical limitations, geothermal energy has the potential to significantly reduce the UK's reliance on imported fossil fuels and instead rely solely on the North Sea for its gas supply.
