A suspected con man who claimed he was with MI6 and Swiss banker conned a divorcee out of £850,000. Now on the run, Mark Acklom claimed to have fleeced 55-year-old Carolyn Woods off her savings.
The 43-year-old Acklom promised to marry Woods as she handed over the money. Ms Woods from Bath told Sky News she had met Acklom in 2012 when he visited her boutique to buy a jacket and told her he was a swiss banker looking to buy an airfield in the UK. “One of the most extraordinary things he told me that it was all a cover and he was an MI6 agent. We were in London and he said he'd been called in by his boss, so he drove me to the MI6 building and I watched him walk down into a car park past two armed policemen.”
Avon and Somerset Constabulary began their investigation two years ago after she reported the fraud. The Constabulary confirmed they were looking for Acklom in Spain who they think is hiding among the expat community and a European Arrest Warrant has been issued.
