Rising to prominence in the late 1960s and the early 1970s, British rock singer-songwriter Rod Stewart was knighted as a CBE at Buckingham Palace. Receiving the honour from Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, said the word “Empire” should be removed from the honours system.

The 71-year-old said: “The Empire’s not quite as big as it used to be, but it's still there.” He added, “I wish my mum and dad had been here to see it.” Sir Rod was accompanied by his wife Penny Lancaster and sons Alastair, 10, and Aiden, five.
