Google have apologised for including the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's photographs in the image search results for “Top 10 criminals.”
Google released a statement to apologise. “We apologise for any confusion or misunderstanding this has caused.”
Modi's images were prominent in the search which showed many images of dictators, murderers and terrorists. It also included world leaders, such as ex US President, George Bush as well as Libya's Muammar Gaddafi.
The Indian names which appeared in the search included the Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, lawyer Ram Jethmalani, underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, as well as Bollywood actor, Sanjay Dutt, who is currently serving a jail term.
Furthermore, the statement issued by Google also mentioned, “These results trouble us and are not reflective of the opinions of Google," the company said in its statement released on Wednesday night. Sometimes, the way images are described on the internet can yield surprising results to specific queries... We're continually working to improve our algorithms to prevent unexpected results like this.”
