A state school in one of the less affluential regions in England, where most students have English as their second language has achieved outstanding results by coming top in the Sunday Times leagues table. This is the first time that a state primary school has achieved this position.

St Stephen's Primary School in East Ham, where most 11-year-old students are from Indian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani backgrounds, has beaten every private school in the leagues table, doing the best in spelling, reading, as well as doing their sums.

Headteacher Neena Lall stated, “Our mantra is: every child can. If they can't, why can't they? There are no excuses and every day counts.”

Lall goes on to explain, “Everything we do here comes from our vision that every St Stephen's child blossoms into a confident, respectful, modern British citizen prepared to be an aspirational contributor in the global community.”
