Mamta was born in Nakuru, Kenya, East Africa, she came to the UK when she was just 8 years old.  She got married aged 19 and settled in Bombay for 7 years working as an Arts and Crafts presenter on national TV- ‘Doordarshan’.  Her interest in creative crafts had been instilled in her from a very young age by her mother, who ensured that Manta and her sister were occupied during their spare time.  Due to change in circumstances Mamta returned to the UK.  She gained employment presenting a children's programme on TV Asia and then Zee TV for almost 7years and at the same time was recruited by Virgin Atlantic Airways as a Ground Customer Service Agent and has been with the company for 27 years.  Mamta does some public speaking and compering events and shows in her spare time.

1)  Which place, or city or country do you most feel at home in?

I have lived most of my life in the UK. Working for an airline has given me the privilege to travel the world. As much as my heart will always remain in India, it has been a blessing to make UK my home. Residing in Britain has enabled me to freely express my culture customs and religion and made me feel at home. I am fortunate to be living in a multicultural society surrounded by different communities and cultures and learning from them every day.

2) What are your proudest achievements?

Giving birth to two of the most amazing sons Jaishil and Jainam. One is a qualified dentist and the other will soon be. They have been through some tough times but have grown up to be kind caring fun loving and respectable young men. They are the result of my achievement and hard work. In return my personal achievement would not have been possible without the life skills my parents instilled in me. I have today reached a point in my life where I'm happy and peaceful.

3) What inspires you?

My family's morals and values inspire me. They show me support in everything I do and make me want to be better than I am. The most rewarding aspect is when what you do or say inspire and motivate others.

4) What has been biggest obstacle in your career?

Obstacles for me have been challenges. And I have had plenty! The support, guidance and discussions with friends and family has been the way to resolve a lot of matters arising. Seeing obstacles from an objective point of view has been easier to tackle systematically.

5) Who has been the biggest influence on your career to date?

Without any doubt, my Husband, Dad, Mum, Brother and Sister. They have been my well-wishers and have always advised me to take the right decisions in life. Belonging to my community, the Navnat Vanik Association has also given me a lot of confidence in myself and pride. The community has expanded my network and given me a sense of comfort and belonging.

6) What is the best aspect about your current role?

I work in a customer facing job which I absolutely love. I am in a senior position which carries a lot of responsibilities and challenges, showing empathy, mindfulness and friendliness towards customers is my strongest asset and this comes with a smile of course! Having the customer engagement skills has allowed me to approach situations with expertise and no two days are the same.

7) And the worst?

To be honest apart from waking up at unsociable hours there really isn't anything that I don't like about my job. I wouldn't have lasted 27 years in the company. However, I have to say seeing customers struggle with their travel arrangements due to unprecedented situations does make it very difficult for me to be able to offer the best assistance that’s in my personality.

8) What are your long term goals?

At this stage in my life, I would say it's to continue to thrive whilst maintaining health and happiness in the ever-changing conditions of the UK.

9) If you were Prime Minister, what one aspect would you change?

Honesty, transparency and saying it ‘as it is’! Pushing for diversity and inclusivity would always be at the forefront of my thoughts. I would need a whole page to list the changes this government needs to make.

10) If you were marooned on a desert island, which historical figure would you like to spend your time with and why.

I am intrigued by CLEOPATRA. My admiration of her beauty, power and intelligence. She was exceptionally well educated, spoke various languages and was a successful leader. She lived a very strange but fascinating life. A controversial figure!
