As we celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 75th birthday, we must reflect not only on his remarkable journey but on the transformative role he has played in solidifying India’s place on the global stage. Having been a Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom for the past 16 years, I have witnessed first-hand the progression of the British-India relationship and its flourishment over the past decade.
India today is one of the most dynamic economies and Prime Minister Modi has overseen a period of bold reform, digital innovation and producing a forward-looking nation. For the Indian diaspora within the United Kingdom, the transformation displays a great sense of pride amongst us.
Throughout the past decade, everything I have done is dedicated to a life of public service and I have been delighted to play a pivotal role in facilitating British-Indian relations. In November 2013 and later again in November 2015, I joined the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, The Rt Hon Lord Cameron on trips to India. These prime ministerial visits were part of a long-term Conservative Party plan to engage with India and I am proud to say they acted as the catalysts for the relationship today.
Economically, the last decade has seen extraordinary progress. In 2013 The Rt Hon Lord Cameron and I laid down the foundations, facilitating the largest trade delegation Britain has ever sent to another country. Bridging India’s focus on higher education and finance with Britain’s expertise meant for the first time, the two were able to combine.
With Modi’s merit the UK remains one of the greatest investors in India and now with the Free Trade Agreement established, this will only exacerbate. The greater opportunities, lower barriers to entry and increased volume of jobs all are an exceptional landmark in history for our bilateral ties. The relationship continues to develop with great diplomacy. The incredible emphasis by Modi on ensuring that our countries not only work together as historical partners but as deep allies, in our exponentially growing world.
Beyond trade, collaboration through Modi’s great visions have expanded. The exceptional ability for Prime Minister Modi to combine his entrepreneurial spirit with his diplomatic vision. Has led to a remarkable shift in history.
For those of us in Britain, our shared values of hard work, integration, family life and resilience all reside with the same values leaders such as Modi and citizens in India hold, making the relationship function organically.
As we look forward to the future, we see a fusion of bonds between Britain and India. A partnership of individuals with equal values and shared history. The forthcoming era of global dynamics. On Prime Minister Modi’s Diamond Jubilee Birthday, we celebrate his mindset, powerful vision, and success.
