This famous quote by Winston Churchill captures the essence of someone who is "punching above their weight." It emphasizes the idea that success is not determined solely by one's initial circumstances or advantages but by the determination, resilience, and courage to continue striving despite challenges and setbacks. It is often used to describe a situation where a small or relatively less prominent group or community achieves a level of influence, impact, or success that surpasses its numerical or size-based expectations. Sir Winston Churchill is someone that Sir Ron Kalifa wishes he could have dinner with. Sir Ron Kalifa is from the Zarathustrian community.
So, who is this group that calls themselves the Zarathustrian community? Zarathustrians (or Zoroastrians, as the Greeks called them) are followers of the ancient monotheistic religion of Zoroastrianism, which originated in ancient Persia (modern-day Iran) and has a rich history dating back over 3,000 years and later settled in India (predominantly in Maharashtra and Gujarat but have had an impact across India).
The World Zarathushti Chamber of Commerce was created, some 23 years ago, to facilitate networking, enhance trade & commerce and to re-energize the Zarathushti entrepreneurial spirit and thus bring about economic prosperity to all Zarathushtis worldwide.
In the last week of July, the London Chapter of this Chamber had the opportunity to host the WZCC2023 London Conclave which was entitled ‘Inspiring Conversations in Inspiring Locations’. Unlike many other conclaves before which would be held in one location, Shernaz Engineer (Chair of the London Chapter) and her amazing team decided that the 100+ delegates (from around the world) should be given a taste of what London has to offer. And so, the entire delegation was transported from place to place; and in each venue, they were exposed to an ‘inspiring’ narrative. From the Palace of Westminster to Lord’s Cricket Ground, to Tower Suites, to a river boat cruise down the Thames – there was something for everyone.
Many of you will have heard of some of these big names, but did you know that they are all Zoroastrian? Included in the line-up of speakers, the WZCC2023 had the following: Lord Karan Bilimoria of Chelsea CBE, Sir Ron Kalifa - Chairman of Network International, formerly Vice Chairman and CEO of Worldpay Group, Sam Balsara – Chairman of Madison World, Dr Zar Amrolia – Chairman of XTX Markets – a leading algorithmic financial technology-based trading firm that partners with institutional clients, Capt. Percy Master - Founder Chairman & Managing Director, Master Marine Services Pvt Ltd, Zubin Karkaria – CEO at VFS Global - the world's largest visa outsourcing and technology services specialist for governments and diplomatic missions worldwide, Chef Cyrus Todiwala OBE, DL – Co-Founder of Café Spice Namasté and celebrity television chef and Professor (Dr) Zubin Sethna – a London-based Professor of Entrepreneurial Marketing – whose books on Consumer Behaviour are the UK and Europe’s best-sellers on the topic.
So, when it comes to this tiny global Zoroastrian community, it is worth noting that there are several factors contribute to its ability to "punch above its weight":
Historical and Cultural Significance: Zoroastrianism is one of the world's oldest known religions, with a rich history and cultural heritage. As such, it has garnered a degree of respect and interest from scholars, historians, and people interested in ancient civilizations.
Influence in Ancient Persia: Zoroastrianism was the dominant religion of ancient Persia (now Iran) before the advent of Islam. The Persian Empire was a major world power, and its cultural and religious influence was significant, leaving a lasting impact on the region and beyond.
Contributions to Humanity: Zoroastrians have made significant contributions to various fields, including philosophy, astronomy, mathematics, and medicine. Prominent figures such as Zarathustra (Zoroaster) and ancient scholars like Avicenna have left a lasting legacy in intellectual history.
Diaspora and Global Reach: Despite being a relatively small community in terms of numbers, Zoroastrians have a widespread diaspora. They have established communities in different parts of the world, including India, Iran, North America, Europe, and Australia, allowing them to have a global presence and influence.
Emphasis on Education and Commerce: Zoroastrians historically placed a high value on education and were involved in trade and commerce. This emphasis on education and business acumen has allowed the community to excel in various fields and contribute to the societies they live in.
Strong Community Bonds: Zoroastrians often maintain close-knit communities that are supportive of one another (the very essence of the WZCC). These strong community bonds foster cooperation and mutual assistance, which can lead to collective achievements and successes.
Commitment to Philanthropy: Many Zoroastrians are known for their philanthropic efforts and commitment to social causes. Their contributions to charitable initiatives and community development have further enhanced their visibility and influence.
Preserving Cultural Heritage: The Zoroastrian community has worked diligently to preserve its cultural heritage and religious traditions, attracting interest and support from individuals and organizations interested in cultural diversity and heritage preservation.
Overall, the global Zoroastrian community's ability to "punch above its weight" is a result of its historical significance, cultural contributions, a strong sense of identity and community, and commitment to education and philanthropy. Despite its relatively small size, the community's impact and influence extend far beyond its numbers.
