After a break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the celebrations of the International Day of Yoga 2023 made a comeback at Trafalgar Square on Tuesday. This year's event witnessed the participation of numerous members from the Indian diaspora and yoga enthusiasts, who gathered at the renowned square in London. The session, which lasted for two hours, was guided by experts from esteemed Yoga organizations based in the UK, including Isha Foundation, Iyengar Yoga UK, Brahma Kumaris, Heartfulness Meditation, and Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur (SRMD) UK. Together, they facilitated a comprehensive and holistic experience for all participants.
The gathering at Trafalgar Square was meticulously organized by the Indian High Commission in London, with the support of the Mayor of London. The event commenced with prayers, setting a serene and spiritual atmosphere. Throughout the session, the experts led the participants through various asanas (yoga postures) and breathing exercises, providing detailed explanations about the specific benefits of each movement. It was a harmonious blend of physical practice and educational insights, enriching the experience for all attendees.
The High Commissioner of India was accompanied by several senior staff members from the Indian mission who actively participated in the comprehensive yoga session. Among them was Sujit Ghosh, the Deputy High Commissioner to the UK, who also joined in the practice. Reflecting on the event, Minister at the High Commission and Director of the Nehru Centre in London, and acclaimed author, Amish Tripathi expressed his delight at the opportunity for the High Commission and the Nehru Centre to host the yoga session at Trafalgar Square—a truly iconic location featuring Nelson's Column and the National Gallery. Amish Tripathi further highlighted the significance of the area, as it is frequented by countless Londoners, making it an ideal setting for the celebration of yoga.
In conjunction with the International Day of Yoga 2023, a series of yoga events were organized across the United Kingdom throughout the week. These events were designed to coincide with the celebration and provide opportunities for individuals to participate in yoga activities.
Additionally, as part of the wider Indian Navy #OceanRingofYoga outreach – the High Commission conducted Yoga with the Royal Navy, onboard the RN Destroyer at Portsmouth to promote Yoga as a way of life for good health and wellness.
