The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, is set to visit the UK in the third week of March. She will arrive in London on March 22 and has a packed schedule before concluding her trip on March 28.
One of the key highlights of her visit is a lecture at Oxford University, following an invitation from Jonathan Michie, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, during the Bengal Global Business Summit in November 2023. Banerjee will be at Kellogg College on March 27 for a conversation with Prof Michie and Bynum Tudor Fellow, Lord Karan Bilimoria.
Their discussion will centre on "Social Development – Girl, Child, and Women Empowerment", offering a rare opportunity to engage with one of India’s most influential leaders on her journey through politics, literature, and cultural advocacy.
On the business front, Ms Banerjee will attend a meeting with business leaders, to explore investment opportunities and economic collaborations.
The Bengali diaspora in the UK is also eagerly anticipating the Chief Minister's visit. She has been invited to unveil Heritage Bengal Global’s eco-friendly idol from the Thames Durga Parade at its permanent home in the Queensgate Shopping Centre in Peterborough. This project is led by the Bengali Sanskriti Club Peterborough in collaboration with Heritage Bengal Global (HBG), celebrating Bengal’s rich cultural heritage.
In addition, she will connect with some of the 40,000-strong Bengali diaspora from West Bengal settled in the UK, fostering deeper cultural and community ties.
