A 24-year-old dental student from Huddersfield, whose brother was allegedly a suicide bomber, is accused of planning a terror attack in the UK. Sheffield University student, Mohammed Awan was arrested after he bought 500 ball bearings online.

Sheffield Crown Court heard that the police had allegedly found “significant volume” of extremist material, including jihadist manuals on how to be a “sleeper cell”. The police had raided his address on 1st June 2017 after he bought 500 ball bearings on 29th May 2017. It is said that the police also found 11 mobile phone, 16 memory sticks and nearly 60 SIM cards that contained terrorism related information. One memory stick is suggested to have a document titled “How to Survive in the West”, as well as other files linked to his university assignments. However, Awan has claimed that the memory stick belonged to his deceased brother and that he kept it for emotional reasons.

Prosecutor Simon Davis told Awan in court, “You put all that together, it is the acceleration what was going on, we say, purely from the mind set to the practical.”

Awan denies three terror-related charges and one count of engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts or assisting others to commit such acts.
