According to experts, rail passengers are being exploited by the expensive train ticket fares.

An analysis of ticket fares during the Christmas period shows up to seven different amounts for the cheapest price on the same route.

The cheapest was a standard ticket on Virgin services, from London to Manchester, which ranged from £73 on one journey, while £20 on another.

Cheapest CrossCountry trains between Leeds and Bristol was £110.80 on one Christmas Eve service, while it cost £32.80 for a train two days later.
