In the lead up to Diwali, The Royal Mint has once again expanded its Indian-inspired gold minted bullion bar range, which now features new 1g and 5g Om gold bars, as well as Ganesh and Lakshmi 20g gold bars. The range combines British minting excellence with Indian cultural traditions, and continues The Royal Mint’s commitment to diversity across its product range.
Of course, no Diwali celebration would be complete without a touch of gold. The five-day festival begins with Dhanteras, and gold plays a key role in its story. According to mythology, King Hima’s son was saved from a fate of death by snakebite thanks to a large distracting pile of gold at the family’s door. This legend has inspired a tradition of buying gold on Dhanteras to ensure good luck for the year ahead.
While gold jewellery has been the favoured gift for a long time, gold bullion is now leading the way with a modern update on tradition. The demand for gold varies throughout the year, but there is often a spike just before a holiday like Diwali, with buyers rushing to snap up gold bars and coins in smaller quantities, which can be given as gifts.
The Royal Mint’s intricate Om, Ganesh and Lakshmi gold bar designs were developed in collaboration with cultural advisor Nilesh Kabaria, who is a member of the Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Cardiff. Nilesh provided The Royal Mint with detailed briefs that captured all of the essential elements required to accurately depict Lakshmi and Ganesh, and the underlying meanings behind each component of the design.
Nilesh also designed the Om bar on behalf of The Royal Mint. As part of the design process, he felt “it necessary to understand the meaning and origin of the Om symbol, the sacred sound generally known as the vibration of the universe”. With that in mind, he “wanted aspects to flow out from the centre and be both controlled as well as free spirited”.
Last year, the Lakshmi 20g gold bar sold out within the first week of going on sale, with a second run of bars following closely after to satisfy customer demand. Dhanteras saw the highest sales of Lakshmi 20g gold bars in a single day.
Andrew Dickey, Director of Precious Metals at The Royal Mint, comments: “Following the success of the Lakshmi 20g gold bar launch last year, we spoke to our customers to understand which Hindu god or goddess they would like to see appear next on a gold bar. Ganesh proved a clear favourite, and so all effort was made to honour the ‘Lord of Beginnings’ on a new 20g gold minted bullion bar in time for Diwali 2022. We have worked closely with Nilesh to ensure accuracy and cultural authenticity in design, to develop a product that incorporates both beauty and tradition, but with a modern twist.”
Each gold bullion bar in The Royal Mint’s Diwali range is struck in 999.9 fine gold and available in a variety of sizes from 1g to 20g editions to suit all budgets. Each gold bar is also imprinted with a unique serial number, and beautifully presented in a blister pack and a henna-patterned sleeve.
