Suffolk Police were called at around 8.15pm after reports that a man had attacked a person with an axe.
The Police have detained a 39-year-old for an attack after being called to the Bell Hotel on Market Hill, Clare.
The victim, a man in his 30s, who suffered a serious head injury, is in a stable condition in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, police say.
The alleged attacker was arrested on Sunday morning in Bury St Edmunds on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
He was then taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre and was later further arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
While enquiries are at an early stage, police believe this is an isolated incident and the police are not looking for anyone else in connection with it.
