Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his ministers gathered at his retreat in Chequers two days ago for his first political cabinet since assuming office, the BBC reported. In a political cabinet, political officials attend to strategize, and unlike official government business, it is not minuted.
It happened during a particularly stressful time for the government with more than one cabinet minister under investigation for their conduct and polls suggesting a significant Labour lead in the run-up to the general elections to be held in the latter half of the next year.
The primary focus of the political cabinet at Chequers was the five priorities that Sunak set out in his new year’s speech- halving inflation, creating new jobs, reducing the national debt, cutting NHS waiting lists, and stopping small boats crossing the Channel.
Among the supposed attendees was Nadhim Zahawi, the Conservative Party chairman who was sacked on the 29th because of the row over his tax affairs. It is not known what transpired in the political cabinet between Zahawi, who was not expected to have a formal role in the agenda anyway, and the other ministers led by Sunak. Sunak had already initiated investigations against him through his ethics adviser, and other ministers had publicly commented on sticking by the findings of the investigations, even if it came to sacking.
Conservative strategy guru Isaac Levido was also in attendance. After leading the party to its 2019 victory, he has returned to play a central role in getting Sunak and his team ready for the upcoming elections.
