Reported surge in forced marriages

With 3,546 cases of forced marriage reported to the police between 2014 and 2016, there have only been two convictions since its criminalisation in 2014. Based on figures obtained by the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation, charities across UK warned that there were thousands of such victims living in conditions of modern slavery in homes across the country. Legal experts and campaigners suggest modern slavery legislation for forced marriages since this crime is notoriously hard to prosecute.
