The High Commission of India in London hosted a commemorative event and a photo exhibition to remember the sufferings of partition on 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' on 14th August 2024 at India House.
The event witnessed readings/poems by Lalit Mohan Joshi, a filmmaker and Shiv Kant Sharma, a Sanskrit scholar. There was also a violin recital by Aparna Raguraman, a Carnatic violinist.
HE Vikram Doraiswami, High Commissioner of India to the UK, in his address to the guests, spoke about the historical trauma and displacement caused by the partition of India and Pakistan, emphasising the shared identity and cultural ties that were disrupted.
He highlighted the impact on communities in Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Bengal, noting the forced migration, loss of property, and the lasting cultural changes. The discussion underscored the importance of remembering these events to prevent future tragedies, acknowledging the trauma experienced by people and the need for institutionalised awareness.
The speech concluded with a call to honour the past by learning from it and striving for a more inclusive and independent society.
