Professor Indranil Chakravorty honoured with MBE

Indranil Chakravorty is a Consultant Physician in General Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine at St George's University Hospital, London. He is the Director of Medical Education and previously Deputy Dean in Health Education England, London (2012-2020). He is an Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Life & Medical Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield. He is the founding chair of the BAPIO Institute for Health Research and editor-in-chief of the journals The Physician and Sushruta Journal of Health Policy. 

Professor Chakravorty was born in Asansol and raised in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand where his father Nidhir Chakravorty, was a geologist for the National Metallurgical Laboratory. He finished his secondary school at Loyola where he was awarded the Mr Loyola award for his contribution and leadership in debating, astronomy, editing the school newspaper and for his academic achievements. He moved to La Martiniere, Kolkata for his high school (ISC), spent a year in Presidency College, studying Physiology then read medicine in Kolkata Medical College. 

After his MBBS in 1992, he completed 2 years of internship and senior house officer training at Kolkata Medical College Hospital. He worked briefly in Bellevue Clinic, ICU before moving to the UK in 1994. 

In the UK, he completed his MRCP (1997), working in Lincolnshire and Birmingham. He undertook his doctoral research on sleep apnoea and health economics from the University of Warwick (2006) and then trained in Respiratory Medicine in London. He was appointed a consultant in respiratory medicine at Lister Hospital, Stevenage, Hertfordshire (2005) before moving to St George’s University Hospital in London in 2010. 

He lives with his wife (Subarna) a paediatric haematologist at King's College, London and daughters Triya (a doctor from Oxford University) and Aria (currently in high school). He attributes his interest in research to his scientist father and his love for social justice and writing to his mother Sharmila, a novelist, feminist and singer. 

Prof Chakravorty told Asian Voice that he is delighted to receive the recognition on behalf of the whole team at BAPIO Institute for Health Research. He was pleased that the important work exploring the differential attainment of medical professionals and inherent healthcare inequalities that affects the outcomes for patients, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, is not only being taken seriously. He hopes that actions, as proposed in the recommendations, will be implemented by all the stakeholders improving outcomes for our patients and colleagues from minority groups.
