Private schools lobbying for top universities

Amid the Covid-19 situation, some private schools have been put under the spotlight for taking advantage of the pandemic and playing with the system, thereby causing disruption to A-levels. According to The Times, these private schools have reportedly been lobbying for top universities and medical schools to take pupils whose performance is too weak to qualify for a place. This is when the exam results are yet to be declared.

“Because the pandemic has meant teachers are awarding A-level grades this year, schools know who has won a place at Oxbridge or medical school and who has not,” Times reported.

The former headmaster of Harrow and chairman of the Independent Schools Council, Barnaby Lenon, who represents more than 1,300 schools, has confirmed that some had sent pleading letters on behalf of pupils who had dropped a grade and urged others to do the same. Many such letters are said to be an attempt to cover the poor performance of pupils in the excuse of the pandemic.

Astounded admissions tutors have gone on record to say that “revealing exam results before publication breaks the rules.”
