The Duke of Sussex is intent on adding a marigold in his Cenotaph wreath as a mark to remember the contribution of the Indian Soldiers who laid their lives for Britain in World War 1 in 1919.
The Duke celebrated the 90th anniversary of Westfield Abbey's Field of Remembrance where he stopped at one of the 370 plots representingregiments and military organisations to talk to Suraj Samant, from the Hindu Council UK.
Traditionally, Marigold is used in India to commemorate the martyrs and Mr. Samanth thought it was only “poignant” to offer this flower on this occasion. Prince Harry alongwith his father had laid a wreath of Marigolds at the India Gate previously.
“The Indian troops who fought for their king emperor in 1914-1918 and again in the second world war, were not reluctant conscripts but eager volunteers for whom military service was an honourable profession. Their service oversees, including the western front, introduced them to new, European ideas of equality, social justice and nationhood- an example of how wars can produce unintended positive consequences.” said author and historian Dr. Zareer Masani.
