Mohammed Sakandar, a taxi driver by profession, was shopping in the city centre when he heard a woman with a baby in her hand, screaming. He saw the kid was pale and wasn't breathing so he immediately laid her on the floor and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Speaking to the local media, Sakandar said, “I heard the mother and grandmother of the baby girl screaming and I just thought, 'what is going on?'. They were holding the baby and I could see the girl was really pale and her eyes were open but not moving. I thought she might have died at one point. Everyone was in such a panic and shouting and crying but I ran over to them and put the baby on the floor held her nose closed and gave her mouth to mouth.” He said he only had to do it two or three times and by then the kid started blinking and breathing again. He put her in the recovery position while an ambulance was called. “I have three children of my own and you never know when you are going to need someone else's help. It was just instinct. I think a lot of people shy away from helping because they think they will do something wrong, and I just had to help.”

Sakandar said he was “shook up” but felt good that he saved somebody's life. The 31 year old is hailed as a hero and is surprised by the public's reaction. He has been praised by hundreds of people and given special recognition from the head of North West Ambulance Service.
