A couple are on trial at the Old Bailey accused of murdering their three-month-old son in July last.

Rebeka Nazmin, 31, and Mohammed Miah, 37, of Poplar, east London, deny murdering their son Rifat Mohammed.

The court has heard the baby who had 47 broken bones and was shaken to death was mistreated as he had a deformity.

The terrible injuries were allegedly caused by squeezing his chest and twisting or pulling on his limbs. Rifat was also hit with the cord of a mobile phone charger and burnt on a radiator, the trial has heard.

Rifat was taken to hospital on July 4, 2016, with broken bones and a fatal brain injury.

Nazmin told a child to shake the baby or put water on him to rouse him and if that failed, to call an ambulance, the court heard.

The child admitted shaking Rifat the day before his death but said Miah was to blame for the fatality.

Miah hit his son and the child with a mobile phone lead, the young witness said.

The parents, however, have blamed the child for Rifat’s injuries.

Nazmin allegedly told police that her husband had a problem with their son’s deformed hand and had abused him because of it.

The parents have been charged with causing or allowing Rifat to suffer serious physical harm between March 31 and July 6, 2016.

The trial continues.
