Old boys' club crumble as women take City jobs

It is believed that the proportion of staff in the financial sector who are female has risen by nearly half - from just 20 percent in 2013 to 29 percent this year.

Adam Jackson of recruitment company Astbury Marsden commented: "Over a quarter of City workers are now women. City firms are clearly doing better at attracting and retaining female talent, certainly in the earlier stages of their careers."

Whilst women are now well represented in 'back office' jobs the majority of top jobs are still help by men and it is believed that the long hours culture of high finance is said to be one of the main reasons why retention amongst women with children is still relatively low.
The increasing importance of Chinese and Indian investment has also seen an increase in the number of overseas staff working in the City. It is now believed that five percent of the workforce is now Chinese - up from 3.8 percent last year - whilst 12 percent is Indian - up from 11 percent during the same period.

These findings, says Mr Jackson, appear to suggest that the financial centre is starting to shake off its ‘old boys’ club reputation.
