Manchester: A Manchester nurse has been awarded a medal for her work in helping tackle the deadly Ebola virus. This medal has been created for the first time to recognise people who have tackled humanitarian crisis and awarded to 3000 people, including to members of the armed forces to doctors, nurses and laboratory specialists.

Cath Nixon, who spent four weeks tackling the deadly disease in Sierra Leone, has also worked as a volunteer nurse in Nepal. She has also spoken about women’s rights at the UN in New York and Parliament in the UK.

Since returning to the UK, Ms Nixon has started a new job working with teenage parents in south Manchester.

Cath was invited to a reception at Downing Street and was handed the new Ebola Medal. Speaking about the award, she said: “It does recognise the work we have done, by British staff, going out to there and helping out.”
