During November and December 2017, there were about 30 Asian gold burglaries that had taken place in Wellingborough and Northampton, and hence, police have made it one of their utmost priorities to tackle this problem and so far nine arrests have already been made.
The increase of Asian gold burglaries has raised concerns in the communities affected and therefore, around 250 people attended a meeting organised in regards to the incidents at the Hindu Community Centre, in Wellingborough.
Chief Inspector Lara Alexander-Llyod from Northants Police also attended this meeting and described it as difficult but constructive. She said, “It's a priority and it has been for the past six weeks. From the beginning of November. There have been 30 burglaries of this type. A few in there are classed as robbery, but what we are seeing is Asian gold burglary. The majority of the incidents are happening in Northampton. But there have been 10 in Wellingborough and a couple elsewhere in the country.”
She added, “People are worried about it, quite rightly, but the meeting was about crime prevention and what they can do to make themselves less vulnerable to this type of burglary. It was difficult, but I feel it was constructive.”
Since the meeting, several actions have been agreed between community leaders and the police, such as regular updates on whether further crimes have been reported.
Following the nine arrests made, one person has been remanded in custody for offences in the area, however, no one has been charged in relation to Asian gold burglaries.
