Murthy family donates £200,000 to the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust

With the receipt of £200,000 from leading entrepreneur Narayan Murthy, wife Sudha Murthy and children Akshata and Rohan, the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust has confirmed that it has crossed the £750,000 mark for the establishment of the Mahatma Gandhi Statue at Parliament Square, in London.

Mr Murthy, the founder of leading IT services firm, Infosys, said "Mahatma Gandhi was someone who demonstrated the tremendous power of leadership by example. His courage and commitment are an inspiration and I am delighted that his statue will stand in such a respected setting."

Thanking the Murthy family, the chair of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust (set up to raise money for the Gandhi Statue) Lord Meghnad Desai said 'This donation once again shows the deep historic links between India and the UK, as well as the respect that Mahatma Gandhi commands and the importance of having his statue at Parliament Square.'

Meanwhile, the Trust is pleased to announce two new patrons Countess Patricia Mountbatten and Lady Pamela Hicks. Countess Patricia and Lady Pamela have become Patrons of the Trust in acknowledgement of their father's long association with Mahatma Gandhi . Their father Lord Mountbatten oversaw the transfer of power in India , and was the last British Viceroy of India.

Some more Trustees will also be announced in early February.
